Portugal for the first time
Hey everyone,
it took a while to update my travelblog and for quite a while it has been a short-distance location. For the reason that my holiday just contains 2 weeks Frank, Andre, Christina and me decided to go for a place we haven't been jet. So the planning started and the flights to Maroc, which would have been my second time, were just too expensive. Portugal had been the choice and Ryanair the cheapest Airline to make the 3 hours travel down to the south west end of Europe. We just had to make it down to Memmingen. We left in sunny and warm weather which makes it easy to pack it all up and step into a small filled up plane.
Once we arrived it took a while to get car and made our way to Arrifana on the west coast of the Algarve. Right before midnight we tried to find our apartment in the dark with a miserable description. This was actually my fault and we were happy to just lay down and relax. We all were excited to see the waves and the spot the next day. The waves were massive, like 8 feet or something. There was no paddling out anywhere. We began the trip with 2 lay days which was quite a bummer. On the second day we drove down to the south coast looking for smaller waves, but the fog was so thick you couldn't even see the line-up.
The swell became smaller and the weather went fine. A lot of sun was joining us for the rest of the week and the wind was easing and turned offshore. For 4 days we were blessed with offshore and about 4 ft in the beginning and clean 1 ft during Sunday and Monday. It was awesome and we stayed in the water as long as we could. We either were freezing or just exhausted. I even had been out for about 5 to 6 hours on a couple of days until I couldn't grab my board anymore. Luckily we had a spare Malibu so I could surf the small conditions for that long.
For the second week we were travelling more often to Amado Beach because Arrifana was more often closed out or simply too small. The guys were ripping pretty good and developed there surfing really well. The nights were filled up with watching movies, playing games and yelling at each other. Like we used to do it back then in France a year before. On one day we went to Sagres, which is a city named after a beer, Frank told us. It was again foggy and misty and it was basically a shopping tour.
All together it was quite cold. The water temperature was about 16° and the average air temperature was about 18° up the the wind. Unfortunately we had just a few sunny days and the most were cloudy. Specially the last day was very cold so we really had to push ourselves to go out. But it was worth it, like in most of the spots in the world you have to drive a little in the morning to check out the conditions and go for a surf. France was always luxury, because you just wake a few meters to the beach and check the conditions.
Anyway it was really fun and we have been in the water as often as we could. Now I have to overcome the winter and wait for the next longer holiday to make the the ocean again. Hopefully I don't have to wait for summer to come. See you.
