Maledives part II

After having a very long trip including two ferry rides and a 4 hour wait I arrived in Himmafushi. You basically only come here to surf, there is harldy nothing else to do out here. But with a spot called Jailbreaks right up front that got its name of the prison located on the island and several high class breaks just around the corner it is the best place to be. As always it attracts the most crowds as well and that is the only thing that bothers me. At times there were around 70 in the water, but we also were lucky and sometimes with the timtiming and had it to ourselves.

The crew is quiet fun. We are stay at Amin's Jailbreak Surf Inn and get a free transport to surf and an awesome breakfast. Everyone knows Amin what makes it sometimes easier in the line-up. We had some really sick waves and since the storms have moved through and all the spots are working the crowds are spreading out. The whole week was packed with a traditional fest where locals from all Islands came to. It started with a dance, than a small palm tree which the single men had to hang up a real palm tree and the single women try to deny. Whoever won needed to pay something or do something for the other. The final was a what we would call a colorful Holy Fest. Followed by the ritual Waterfest to clean yourself.

I was supposed to go on a different island and a less crowded surf, but I will stay until the end of my trip through the Maledives. The other day we went swimming after surf and all got so excited about the fish we saw and swam through. We saw turtles and the deep of the channel right next to the reef where the turtle disappeared seemed endless. But see yourself.
