New Zealand part IV

The North Island was histoy and I needed at least 3 more weeks to surf Northland, Gisborne and the Wellington area. But time was up and I picked up my pretty small car in Christchurch after a short flight from Auckland.

I was able to say goodbye to Aaron and had one last visit in the biggest Kiwi-City. But instead of doing some sightseeing I went to the cinema to watch the latest Star Wars and get into Christmas mode - not really successful though with 25°.

After a fairly short drive to Kaikoura Meatworks said hello while the wind been offshore after a storm was rushing through - appearently. First surf in and the second and third the next days at famous Mangamaunu. Not big, but beautiful. The hostel had a nice vibe with friendly longterm girls and a whirlpool.

Robert arrived only a few days later and we enjoyed our stay very much. He has really bad luck with the weather on his bike and was more than ready to so literately nothing and relax. We spend Christmas together mostly in the whirlpool and making potato salad with chicken to have some sort of tradition.

After a week we went to Dunedin with a short stop at Akaroa and Bank's Peninsula. Dunedin was almost empty, some restaurants haven't even been open, because all the students are off and on holiday. It was a little weird and the weather didn't get better.

New years eve was quite nice and warm, but the new year started weird. It was noon and it looked dark and orange - like in Independence das right before the alien ship appears out of the clouds. It was cold and rainy the whole day as it turned out the Ausstralian bush fires have smoked the sky over New Zealand.

We tried to entertain ourselves with a trip to Port Charmers, Otago Peninsula and of course a few surf sessions. I usually surfed St. Clair beach and ticked off another spot of the surf movie "Drive through New Zealand". But we were not sad leaving Dunedin after all, but knew our time together is coming to an end unfortunately. But don't ask what it took to put luggage, bicycle and two boards in a small car.

On the very last day I took Robert surfing in knee high waves and he did more than okay, even stood up multiple times to be stoked as.
